  • We left LAX in the dark and as we flew north about an hour we saw the sunset again. As we fly into the night toward Anchorage it got lighter. When we arrived at Anchorage at 12:30 AM local time, it was almost dark but by the time we got to our friends' house at 2:00 AM it was light again.

  • We stopped at a native village. This is a "stash," a building on stilts to keep the bears from raiding the food stored for the winter. Most of the food consists of dried fish and other meats.

  • Look very carefully at this photo. The mobile home is actually mounted on the barge. It was used by a former governor as a campaign tool. He toured the state's waterways using the boat as his home. Notice the writing on the barge.

  • This is the Susan Butcher sled dog ranch. This visit was just about a week before she passed away from cancer. For the boat passengers, they hooked up a team to an ATM and let the dogs run. They were so pumped when the boat pulled up that all hundred or so began to leap into the air and bark. They live to run and pull.

  • When the dogs were unhooked from the ATV, they all ran and jumped into the river. The temperature of the water was about 40 degrees or less. They loved it.

  • This parka took about six months to make and is all hand made. A parka like this will sell for up to $15,000 each. We were allowed to touch a small piece of fur but not the parka. Those who lived there told us that these are extremely warm in the cold winter.

  • It is very typical to see a small plane in the front yard instead of a car. This plane is converted to a ski plane in the winter and lands on the river.
