Woodie Moore > Our second port was Juneau, the state capitol. The capitol building is not impressive as state houses go, but was interesting to visit. Alaskans are trying to get the capitol moved to the central part of the state nearer to Anchorage where most of the population is centered.
Woodie Moore > This totum was at the hertiage center in downtown Juneau. When you hear natives explain a totum it tells such a richs story of their history.
Woodie Moore > A visit to the Red Dog is considered a must. However, this is as far as I got on the visit. With about four cruise ships docked, there must have been about 7,000 tourists in town. Many had the same idea so a photo was enough for us.
Woodie Moore > The doors are open to every hotel and shop as you walk down the streets.
Woodie Moore > One of the many salmon hatcheries we saw in AK.
Woodie Moore > This was actually a part of a museam display as was the brown bear in the next photo.
Woodie Moore > Not alive thank goodness.
Woodie Moore > This is our first glimpse of a glacier. This is the Mendenhall glacier. It is outside Juneau about 15 miles and requries a short bus or taxi ride. Private vehicles are not permitted because of the limited parking.
Woodie Moore > The Mendenhall Glacier was the first glacier we saw on the voyage. It is beautiful but not a calfing glacier like we would see later on the cruise. The hardy souls could hike over to it and stand on the ice.
